Little Bear stops by the fire and shakes, then motions with his head towards the side of the stream. Fish there. Eat.
Rotem walks over to the stream, sniffing around. Where? he asks, looking about.
A shimmer of light appears over the stream, swirling an illuminated light blue before the nomoon Gnawer steps out of the Umbra. She looks back and gives herself a short shake of fur before sniffing. An ear tilts to the cub.
Rotem walks up to Yi and licks her muzzle playfully, before turning back to Little Bear. Where?
Little Bear turns around to look at where the cub is looking, and spies Yi's entrance. He immediately charges her and bows her over, crying Fish Theif!
Rotem blinks, not understanding what is going on. He steps back, and shifts up to hispo form as well.
Fish wha--yip! Yi is completely bowled over and the two of them sploosh unceremoniously into the stream. Taken by surprise, her wits come back with numerous bubbles as she fights underwater to make it back to the surface.
Flying-Wolf watches the two, considering what to do. He waits to see what happens before stepping in.
Little Bear surfaces in lupus, tongue lolling. Where's my fish? I left them right where you were! His bark is playful as he steps on Yi's head to exit the stream.
Three-Blades splutters again as her head dips into the freezing stream and she roars with a mighty splash of water for air. Gaaaah cold! Her fur is quickly shaken, no questions answered as great streaks of water droplets are sent everywhich way, particularly in Little Bear's direction. Ears plastered back, she snorts at him. I don't know what you're talking about. And it's hard to lie in lupus, for one. She stands there, dripping indignantly. And then she snaps at Rotem. Haven't you learned that shifting isn't always the answer?
Little Bear looks from Rotem to Three-Blades, and bowls her right back into the water again.
No. The cub replies, then wags his tail. Now if were hispo, not be wet again!
Flying-Wolf scampers off back to the fire, rooting around it and sniffing, looking for something.
The water broils as Three-Blades in crinos surges out and grabs Little Bear before he can escape, tossing him right into the middle of the stream. She looks a little funny to shake in crinos, but shake she does, again sending mini-tsunamis of water droplets everywhere before shifting down again. Grumblegrumble...
Flying-Wolf shifts back to homid, rolling with laughter. "Shift! She... " the cub can't control his laughter, "She shifted!" he snickers, laying on the ground.
Little Bear yips as he flies through the air, SPLOOSHing mightily. He surfaces and dog-paddles towards the bank, ears back, then shakes the water from his coat, grinning. I was playing. Marten probably got the fish. Or bluejay, or raven. We'll catch more.
Three-Blades snorts at the laughing cub. I didn't say it was Never the answer did I? She sits down by the fire on the other side and proceeds to lick some of the water off her coat. Ravens are talkative... when you can get them to talk.
Rotem goes to retrieve his stick. "Can I at least hunt them my way?" the asks, lifting the branch turned spear.
Little Bear moves to sit next to her and helps Three-Blades, licking at her ear and tickling the inside of it. Go ahead and try, cub.
Three-Blades flicks the ear the Wendigo licks and runs her tongue over his muzzle once in mutual packmate affection. Her eyes stray to the spear and she cants her wet head. You are fast enough to catch fish with that?
Rotem gets up and heads back over to the stream, the sharpened staff in his hand. He stands in the cold waters, holding still. He stays perfectly still, letting the fish pass him. As one nears he slams the spear down... and misses.
Little Bear chuffs in amusement. Guess not. You will eat with us? He turns to Three-Blades curiously.
Rotem attempts to catch another fish. Missing again, the cub growls, and falls still, waiting.
Three-Blades licks the tip of her wet nose. I will. But I will catch my own fish. She lolls her tongue in a grin. Not steal the catch of others like a stinky wolverine. The nomoon gets up and trots over towards the stream where Rotem is disturbing the fishies.
Little Bear chuckles and decides to enjoy a rare moment of laziness as the other fish, lolling on his side in the dirt by the banked fire.
Rotem doesn't notice Yi. He is too busy eyeing a nice big salmon that is heading his way. The cub has to twist in order to aim for it, but his effort pays off, as the spear sinks into the fleshy side of the salmon. The cub then flicks it up onto the shore, calling out, "JACKPOT!" and going over to grab the bleeding and flopping fish.
Little Bear looks up. No, that's a cutthroat.
Three-Blades wades into the water and looks up. Throat cutter? Where? She looks around for said 'dangerous beast'.
Little Bear pages to the room: Cutthroat has a bright red throat. :) Thus the name :)
Rotem smiles and goes to pick up his fish. The cub walks over to Little Bear. "Watch it for me?" the cub asks, "I need to go thank him." the cub smiles offering the fish to Little Bear.
Little Bear nods. I will. No more free food for the ravens today.
Three-Blades looks back down into the water, ears perked in upright triangles as she watches the fish swim by and around like her legs were tiny saplings. One even ventures a nibble at her fur, but her jaws swiftly lunge down...and miss. Doh. But, the Gnawer nomoon is patient. She waits for another opportunity.
After a few more tries, the nomoon finally snags a decently sized meal and lifts it out of the water. The flopper swings its tail flailing, but soon enough Yi carries her twitching prize back towards the fire.
Rotem heads off back to the river. He kneels and goes off to thank the spirits. After a few minutes the extatic cub is back. "Damn that is a big fish!" he smiles, looking to Little Bear. "What herbs do we have around here?" the cub asks, curious.
Little Bear watches Yi, amused. The mighty hunter returns. He looks over towards the river, and shifts up to reply. "There's sage and wild onions...though I don't think they're big enough to use yet."
Three-Blades sets the fish down in front of Leonard and whuffs a short retort. While the lazy bear waits to steal from the wolf's hard earned meal. Her tongue lolls again and she gives the fish a lick.
Rotem shakes his head. "Nah. Not good on salmon anyway." the cub smiles. "Salmon steak for breakfast!" the cub goes to pick up his fish. "Yo, elder, Want first share?" the cub asks, calling over to Yi.
Leonard grins. "I've earned my keep chasing your cub all over the forest this morning." He nods approvingly at Rotem.
Three-Blades chuffs negatively, having her own fish to eat. She shifts up as well, using the advantage of her opposable thumbs to find a decent rock and scale the slippery flopper even as its remotely twitching. "My cub now?" she queries with her eyes on the work. "You were the one to take him in... any day now I expect he might even be rited as a Wendigo." She laughs softly and looks up.
Rotem snickers and cuts in, "I can only hope." the cub winks and goes to get his switchblade from the ground.
Yi laughs again, finishing the scaling of the fish. She wipes off her hand on some of the grasses around, and looks for a stick to spit it on. One might wonder where she got so much knowledge about outdoor cooking from as she returns from a brief walk to the edge of the forest and returns with fish gutted and spitted to set with a few rocks by the fireside, holding the fish away from the main flames.
Leonard stands, dusting off his (wet) jeans. "Alright, I need to go check on the buffalo. Rotem, you show her what you've learned, hey?" He glances at Yi, smiling. "I'll be back in a few hours."
Rotem follows suite. Although the considerably larger fish is filleted with the knife. Then the half he has cut off, and the first half, with the spine, are both speared on a stick. He roasts them upon the flames, smilling. A nice large meal. "Yeah, I lit it with a lighter, But I l-lit it. That is what is im-important."
Yi nods over at Leonard and smiles. "I'll leave a fish for you. Promise."
Rotem watches Leonard go, then quickly turns to Yi. "Chocolate. Tell me you have some with you."
Yi looks up from the fish she's watching to the cub. Her head tilts, then shakes. "I don't bring snacks when I come up here." She grins at him, a knowing smile flitting over her face. "Missing the city?"
Rotem replies simply with a question. "Do you /know/ what I used for toilet paper?!"
Yi thinks on this, then decides she doesn't want to know. Her hesitation to chuckle about it tells. "But do you like it out here? Have you learned well from Leonard?" Fish on a stick gets turned a little.
Rotem sighs and confesses, "I complain to you.. but honestly.." the cub pauses, "I don't think I really want to go back there."
"I admit it's nice here," Yi replies with her own mini-confession. "There aren't any forests in Hong Kong except one in the park, and that was planted." She looks up from the fish and the land surrounding. "It is very beautiful here," she murmurs and turns back to the fish. "But the city is where I was born and raised. And the city is where the Wyrm is hitting hardest, so the city is where I will be." She looks up from the fish slightly, watching Rotem.
Rotem shrugs, turning his stick to roast the fish evenly. "I just.. I like it here." he says quietly. "Do I have to go back to the city.. after I'm done here?"
Yi turns her eyes down to the fish, poking it gently to test the meat. "You are a Bone Gnawer cub. I will let you answer that question," she says softly. There's a minutes pause, only the crackling of the fire and slight sound of steam escaping from the fish to break the silence. "When you are rited, then you can decide where to go." She looks back up at the cub. "But you have to remember. You are an ahroun, and your duty is to fight the Wyrm." She gazes out again over the land. "I mean, if you don't... we risk losing a warrior that could help in preventing places like these.. become places like St. Claire."
Rotem nods. "I'll come when needed. Just howl." The cub smiles. "And I'm not planning on living like tonto over there." the cub smiles. "I like the finer things. I'll have a lighter. Some /real/ spices. Living off the land is nice, but I want some of the good stuff." The cub turns his fish again, "Right now, a little tomatoe, zucchini, basil, oregano, and spicey papprica, I would kill for. Wrap it all up in tin foil with the fish, and toss it into the fire. Mmmmm."
Yi isn't an Iron Chef Salmonella, though she figures whatever the cub describing must be good. "You also should keep in mind... this is Wendigo territory. My pack, right now, help watches over this land and the lake further down, keeping it a pure refuge." She levels a gaze at the cub to make sure he understands. "I come because I asked, and was granted the privilege of learning about the ways of the wild and run of this land. I hope, at least, to return the favor by teaching the Wendigo about the city. Good things, and bad." The fish is turned again, one side firming up more. "At least, though, if you wanted you could run around the caern sometimes. Maybe further in the future, even asked to be one of the main Guardians." She says it with a capital G. "For now, though, just concentrate on learning what you can from Little Bear. Then we'll go back citywards, finish what we started, and rite you."
Rotem blinks. "Whoa." the cub mumbles to himself, even if mentioned as something far off, that is the first time anyone has even mentioned riting him. "Bitching." the cub smiles, turning the fish around. "Salmon's leap looking for more? You know.. after I rite." the cub pulls his fish in, examining it. "I wonder who I should pack with."
Yi shrugs, and pinches the fish some more before lifting it out of the fire's flame and peeling a strip off to test. She swallows before setting the stick back against the rocks. "Who knows?" She stretches slightly and then relaxes again. "The world changes fast, especially when you are out in a ..." she pauses, looking for the word, "a timeless place like this one. The city moves on, animals move on, the streams continue to flow..." Her eyes check towards the water, as if to really make sure it's there. "Maybe once you are rited, there will be new packs, or old packs changing form. The future is never certain," she says quietly, looking down with a sad memory, and murmurs, "That is a truth."
Rotem nods. "Yeah, burn that bridge when we come to it." the cub pulls his fish out as well. The Salmon is bigger, but needs less cooking then most other fish. The middle is still a little under-done, not having that lighter pink color. The cub puts it back into the flames. "So, if I get Rited in the next few months, you think I can come to the sewers?" the cub asks expectantly.
Yi looks back up, dispelling the past for the here and now from her head. She nods, affirmatively. "The sewers are still a problem. I hope they might not be as big a problem by the time you are rited, but there is certainly plenty to go around," she states with a matter-of-fact tone. "We'll need every able Garou we can spare." The nomoon takes the fish off the fire and starts eating, regardless of the slightly underdone meat at the middle. "I ask you then," she swallows before speaking more, "What would you do, if there was a big nest of banes under the expensive part of the city, with humans all around during the day and who knows what at night? It is like Hong Kong, that way... everything has a pleasant mask, but underneath lies such darkness it almost swallows the light you try to bring to it." Her eyes flicker up at the cub. She asks the question with an honest tone, seeking his opinion. Any strategy, any idea from anybody, is something to consider.
Rotem nods. "And too small for Crinos, hmm..." the cub pauses, considering. "I had an idea, but most won't like it." The cub puts his fish down in one of the two bowls, and pulls a piece off, swallowing it down.
"With only the width of two at a time, in the smallest forms, to fight with," Yi replies, chewing on her own fish. "So far we have thought from lights, to mirrors, to firebombs, to flooding..." Her head tilts with gaze curious. "What's your idea?"
Rotem repeats, "They won't like it." the cub sighs, "Well, its like this..." the cub looks away from his food for a while. "You been to a camping goods store lately?"
Yi shakes her head, but looks interested anyway. Camping isn't exactly available by the docks, but now that she's here with some good ole fashion fireside talk, she listens with ears open.
Rotem chuckles. "No, but they have these big metal cans. With a hose on them. For gas grills." The cub pauses, "And if you put a nossle on that, you get a bitching flamethrower." The cub smiles. "Stay in homid, and keep five feet of flame in front of you. Just walk through the sewers in pairs, burn everything out."
Yi thinks over this, trying to imagine the contraption. "A nozzle... like, a garden hose? The one to squeeze and the water comes out?" Her eyes rise off the cub's face, but it is a musing look.
Rotem shakes his head. "Go to a gas station. Some of them have it on air hoses. It looks like a little gun thingie." the cub makes a 'finger pistol' with one hand. "Pull the trigger, and you get gas." the cub pauses, considering. "You could duct tape a lighter to the s-side of it, to get it started."
Yi looks thoughtful again, brow furrowing with effort to imagine the makeshift flamethrower. Then she queries further, "That would be an interesting idea. I'll keep that in mind... but would the gaslines be in danger? That was one of the concerns that we had last time. John threw a napalm bomb into the sewer, and it burst against a wall only to cause a gas pipe to burst. Almost burned his face off."
Rotem snickers. "He used a bomb down there?" the cub chuckles, "Serves him right. You'll crack a pipe, and... boom." the cub shakes his head. "No, you can turn off the flamethrower if you're worried, and even if its on, I doubt it will burn through a gas line. Not unless you leave it on the same part for more then.. hmm.. ten minutes." the cub shrugs. "Be careful, but I doubt it would be a big problem."
Yi nods slowly, thinking more along the lines of how gas stoves work and going from there. "That might work," she says quietly.
Rotem nods. "Use good hoses. Be careful." the cub repeats, leaning back. He eats silently, finishing off half the fish before removing the spine. The bones are snapped off, and the fish's vertibae are popped in his mouth. The bones then come off, and are put in his pocket. "Oh, Yi?" he asks, looking up to her again.
Yi eats as neatly as she can, looking up again when her name is called. "Mm?"
Rotem looks up to Yi, blushing deeply. "Umm, can I have some of your hair?" he asks, obviously embarassed at asking.
Yi stops her chewing, the pause between them awkward. Finally, she swallows and clears her throat, glancing up at the cub with arched brow. "What for?" Her hair is still slightly damp, given the number of times she was dunked in the stream.
Rotem wipes off his knife, then hands it to her. "I'm making something." he says quietly, "I need some fairly long hair. Would you mind?"
Yi looks from knife to cub, to knife, and back again. She takes it, slowly, wary as if the knife might jump out and slice before she could react. "How...much... do you need?" comes the deliberate question. "And what is it you're making?" She looks down at the knife again, turning it slightly as it glints off the afternoon sun.
Rotem shrugs. "Not much. Just enough for me to make some little thin string." The cub smiles. "Nobody will notice."
Rotem adds, "Or, you could smuggle me a big rubber band." the cub chuckles. "If you're worried about your hair, and want to s-save me some work."
Yi tilts her head, brow still arched up with silent inquiry. She looks at the knife again, then shrugs. It wasn't so much the hair problem, rather, the use of it. Yi's done her fair share of self haircuts, and she wipes her hand off on her slightly wet pants before selecting out a small lock of the hair beneath the outermost layers. Switchblade in hand, her eyes turn to the very edge to gauge the distance and line of cut before she swipes the blade down and slices off the lock of hair. Giving her head a shake to relay the strands, there is little evidence of any haircut, though she could physically feel it a tad lighter. She hands both small handful of decently long hair and blade back to the cub. "It is a strange question you asked, but, I guess it will grow back soon enough. I don't have any rubber bands in my pockets right now."
Long distance to the room: Yi inserts dramatic (or not so dramatic) Mulan music right when she cuts her hair. Teehee.
Rotem smiles and takes the hair first, then the blade. "Thanks." he says, pocketing the blade and immidiately going to work on tieing the hair together. Once the ends are bonded, he starts braiding it. "This will be good."
Yi leans over slightly to watch him work, curiosity getting the better of manners. "So what are you really making with my hair?" she asks again, prodding invisibly with her eyes.
Rotem continues working, braiding it together to make string. "You'll see." he doesn't look to her, busily working on the hair. After almost half an hour of work it is done, and he starts pulling fish vertibrae out of his pocket. Not just from the salmon, but also yesterday's catch. Each bone is threaded onto the string, and after he is done, the ends tied together. "Here." he says, offering it to her. "I saw someone make one of these on TV." the cub remarks, smilling.
Yi patiently sat by the cub the whole time, watching his fingers work and move the hairs along and finally push them through the fishbones. When he ties it and offers it back to her, she blinks again. The necklace (?) is plucked up carefully, the nomoon thinking it fragile when it is actually fairly strong. "On TV?" she queries curiously, pulling it slightly to test its strength. "What kind of show is that?"
Rotem shrugs. "Make it new." he replies. "But they used plastic beads." The cub motions to her. "Try it on. Lets s-see how it looks."
Eyeing the necklace and the fish vertebrae, Yi takes both ends and strings it around her neck. Fingers work a simple knot in the back, and when she's done it sits comfortably around her collarbone, the backbone pieces clinking slightly. She chuckles at the sound, and just the idea of wearing fishbones.
Rotem smiles. "There. Now you look like a proper Wendigo." The cub chuckles and leans back. "I guess you can just toss that in your Stuff collection if you don't like it."
Yi fingers the bones and they clink again softly against each other. She looks up at Rotem and smiles. "Thank you," she says with a dip of her head, the cultured habit coming out. "I might not sleep with it on, but this is a great gift." She holds up her head and tilts it this way and that, feeling the bones and her own hair shuffle over her skin. "Just one step closer to being a Wendigo, na?" she laughs. "I'll be sure to show it to Little Bear. Or better yet, borrow some hair from him while he's sleeping and make one for him." She laughs again, louder, just imagining trying to pluck hair off the sleeping Wendigo. The nomoon gives Rotem a wink. "Thanks for the idea. I owe it to you."
Rotem shakes his head. "Nya, Y'dun owe me nuthin' " The cub fishes out more bones from his pocket and hands them to Yi. "But thanks anyway."
Yi takes the bones and a little time to inspect them before pocketing them into her front vest pocket. "It is my culture to give when I receive," she says with a smile. "I'll have to make it up to you somehow." She stands, brushing off her pants and moving the picked at fish onto some heated rocks for it to keep warm. "I have to go, but, when Leonard gets back, tell him I saved him his fish, na?" She grins. "I'll see you around. Don't let your skin turn too red now."
Rotem snickers, then in a redneck accent, "Y'all better come back now." the cub winks to Yi. "Bring chocolate, and we'll call it even."
Yi smiles with a slight twinkle in her eye. "I won't tell if you won't," she replies. And with that, she starts picking her way back through the forest, the smallest whistles of some birdsong imitation coming to her lips.
