Just outside town, the trio of ragabash approach the illegal tire dumping ground via Yi's Mystery Mobile. The mystery of how it continues to run is just that, but it suffices to get things from A to B. Helen and Rusty are forced to sit in creaky passenger and backseat of the rusty musclecar, and Yi's driving is not bad. Once they arrive at a chosen destination, where the Gnawer fostern parks the car in view of the thick black smoke ever rising from the fire, she instructs the two other newmoons. "We are here to find out what is causing this fire to keep burning. Once we find out, we go. If any of you get into trouble, get away from the place as fast as you can, to safety. It is a fairly big yard, so we will stick together, and if there needs to split our senses, then I will let you know. Keep in sight of the others at all times, and try to keep quiet. Howl if you are attacked." That's all for strategy for now, and she leads the pair out of the car, into the woods, and the trio push through the Gauntlet and into the Umbra, heading for the yard. They shift in the Shadow, with Runner marking the spot where they entered.
As the group comes on the illegal tire yard from the umbra, they can see various spirits of the city that seem to have lost their way, weak and frightened as they are occasionally as they dart here and there, something blindingly fast and shadowy will pull them into the darkness of the umbral airts where a short screech is heard and then silence once more. The fire is seen well before the tireyard itself resolves clearly into view for the umbral Garou. However, only the haze of fire is clear, as smoke spirits thick, black, and toxic, flow smoothly around the yard as if some kind of living barrier from those who would dare enter. From this distance and with the smoke, it is impossible to make out any other details within.
Runner flags her tail up as they near, nose sniffing, testing. The Gnawer orders a halt for a moment, as she looks at the weak spirits get drawn in. The screeches cause her ears to tilt back. ~Come. We circle first. Look for an opening.~
Rusty chuffs very softly. ~They're not good at sneaking...but looking at that mess, I could wish for a few dozen ahrouns with us...~ He nods to Runner.
~We are scouting, not going to fight.~ Cycle-Breaker follows after Runner, glancing warily over to the fire. ~This should be loads of fun,~ she adds, ears twitching back at the shrieking.
The place looks strangely dark but bright. The flames dance blackly behind an undulating shade of fumes and smokey breath. Getting near, one can feel the smoke spirits watching them, a mixure of fear and hunger coming from the shades.
Runner watches as well, looking for an opening. ~You two - we need to find a way to get in there. I suggest a diversion.~ The way she growls this out, it's heavy with request. ~A two-sided attack to this problem. The smoke is watching, but our goal is inside.~
~Which one of us goes in?~ asks Cycle-Breaker, warily eyeing the smoke spirits. ~What if you don't come out?~
Rusty chuffs softly, and nods. ~How sneaky can you be?~
Runner lifts her head. ~I could not ask you to sacrifice yourselves going alone. The leader does not throw away her charges. You two, create the diversion. I will go in.~
The flowing and amorphous shifting of the smoke spirits seems to almost leave holes here and there, but they fill in just as quickly as they appear. In the distance to the east one can feel an approaching sense of unnease.
Rusty tilts his head, considering the smoke. ~The two of us run near it, and then split apart, going around in opposite directions. While you sneak through the middle? We'd need to back up and come back on it after you go to sneaking.~
Cycle-Breaker watches Runner carefully. ~If you're sure,~ she says, ducking her head a bit. She then turns towards Rusty. After he is done speaking she says, ~That sounds like it could work. If anything happens with the spirits, if they come after any of us--do we run? Fight back? I think we should leave. We're here to scout...not fight.~
Rusty looks to Runner. ~How long do you want in there? We can howl before we do a diversion again, so you can get out...but you'll need to come back out in the same place...~
Runner licks her jaw and bobs her head, glancing east then back to the pair. ~Count to three-hundred. Then howl. I will return,~ she rumbles with attempts at reassurance.
Runner adds, ~If they come after you... get to safety.~
Rusty chuffs, nodding. ~All right.~
Cycle-Breaker lets out a little noise in understanding, trotting over towards Rusty. ~Let's go?~ she suggests hesitantly.
The smoke spirits seem unknowing, nothing in their behavior betrays knowledge of the plot against them.
Rusty nods. ~Ready if you two are?~
Runner readies herself, calling upon another gift and wiping her scent away.
Those with the gift of water's scent activated all but vanish from the noses of those around them. This isn't too impressive given the strong smells of toxic fumes, fire, and smoke coming from ahead.
Rusty tenses up, glancing over at Cycle-Breaker. ~I'll circle left, you take the right.~ With that, he darts towards the wall.
As the pair jump to their spots and break away in a run, one to the right and the other left, Runner steps forward and tenses, ready to spring forth. Her form shifts down to that of the lupus, applying her speed rather than strength to getting through.
As the two cliath rush forward Runner sees what appears to be pillar of fire inside, there this whole time, become smaller, closer to the ground.[1. Through the haze, it is difficult to tell just what it is though. The two gets very close to the smoke, and the spirits grow faces that look pathetic to bear. Rusty shooting left and Helen right, they manage to time their turns almost perfectly and in unison. The spirits they were attempting to distract are distracted just enough for Yi to leap through a hole made that closes on her hind quarters as she is almost through. The smoke feels warm, but not quite hot, and no damage is incurred at all. The smoke spirits follow the two running around with their leering, sad, voiceless faces, but when one bumps into another it remains where it is rather than just pulling along like some kind of curtain. The end result is the spirits don't really go anywhere, but they all seem to be keenly aware of the Garou running around them. Everyonce in a while one of the spirits push out towards the running Garou, causing short fits of coughing and a burning of throat and lung.
Rusty starts counting as he runs. Three hundred then howl.
While the two run outside of the ring, Runner searches for a spot to stop, some kind of cover if there is any. The pillar of fire is observed as she slows down, pausing for just a moment and invoking one last gift.
Inside, Runner finds the hole behind her quickly closed and within it is a small hell on Earth. There is burning toxic tar everywhere, like small lakes of corruption and corrosion. Lumbering within, the things thought to be moving pillars of flame are in fact, man-shaped fire elementals. Occasionally from the dull and darkly burning fire a plume of flame billows up and one of the elementals flows over like it were liquid drawn through an invisible tube to gobble it up. These plumes of flame carry a slight green tint to their orange hue and as the Elemental's "eat", they too carry that tint more and more. One of the tainted elementals, just finished feeding, looks towards Yi. It is about 15 feet away and the Gnawer feels the heat as it opens its mouth, and with the sound of a roar like a wild cat a giant gout of flame shoots out over the distance /almost/ reaching Runner. It starts to flow towards Yi, pausing only two seconds to consume another plume of sickly flame that shoots up from the pools of black burning death.
Runner tenses, feeling the heat. But still, she doesn't move a muscle as the spirit starts towards her. Not one move.
The spirit stops about 6 feet away, and once more a gout of flame shoots from it's mouth. In the distance, another 3 of the spirits can be seen approaching from other points of the fire yard.
Outside of the smoke, the two can hear that jungle cat-like roar once more.
Rusty whines softly as he runs, circling the smoke. Still counting, he starts to bark loudly as he runs.
Fwiffo pages: There is a large blast of flame coming at Yi.
Fwiffo pages: Nope. Just the elementals, and the strange and seemingly random gouts of flame. They /do/ appear to only come from specific places though.
Following Rusty's lead, Cycle-Breaker also starts making noise as she rushes away, trying to be as loud as possible to alert Runner to get the hell out of there.
Fwiffo pages: The one closest to you seems to be about 9 feet tall currently, but very thin. It almost looks 'gaunt'. The others, it is difficult to say, various heights. All 'thin' though.
Seeing others close in, Runner forgos the stealth and snarls as she dodges to a side to avoid the flames. There's just one pause to howl out a retreat, and diversion be damned, the Gnawer ragabash beats a hasty backpedal.
The fire singes up and down Runner's left side, leaving burnt hair and some small amount of wounds along that side of her. She steels herself and leaps back throug the smoke, a moaning heard coming from it as the Gnawer's eyes and lungs burn. She suffers briefly at she moves at a strong clip, but once on the other side the 'pillar' within moves back away to a smaller plume of fire.
Rusty heads away from the foul smoke when he hears the howl to retreat.
Runner tumbles out of the smoke, coughing and spluttering but still running. Her left side is burnt and smells that way, but she croaks out a yip. Back! Get back! Though stumbling blindly for just a moment, the fostern shifts to hispo with a painful whine, and slows to a stop once she's finally stopped feeling the immediacy of flame.
Rusty runs, arcing back until he's headed for Runner while still moving AWAY from the smoke.
Runner continues to limp along, once the pain and spiritual smoke inhalation have settled a bit more. ~Back to the car,~ she tells them hoarsely, casting a second glance back at the smoke and fire. ~Hidden Walk, we have a problem.~
Once back across the Gauntlet and in the Realm, it's clear that the fostern is not in any condition to do any driving. But at her request to return to the farmhouse, along the way Yi describes all that she saw to the two other ragabash. It's not pretty. Definitely not pretty.
