Farmhouse: Kitchen and Dining Room
Homey is the first word to come to mind when looking at the farmhouse's kitchen. Dark, wood-paneled wainscoting covers the walls to about waist height, dark beige wallpaper continuing to the ceiling. Twin refrigerators occupy the north wall, facing the large six-burner stove on the south. The kitchen counter runs the length of the eastern wall, broken only by the double-basin sink. Cabinets run above and below the counter and a twin-pane window is set in the wall above the sink. A small pantry is set into an alcove alongside the refrigerators, presumably holding the deep freezer as well as shelves of dry goods.
Some twelve feet above the floor, a large chandelier hangs from the ceiling, lighting the dining room and casting long shadows over the bar to the kitchen. A long table occupies the center of the dining room, three chairs setting along each side, and one on each end. On the west wall, a large window looks out on the trees alongside the western pasture. Set into the north wall is a large cabinet, its glass doors closed on shelves containing a full compliment of fine china and glassware as well as a few decorative nicknacks. On the east, a wide bar separates the dining room from the kitchen.
An opening in the southern wall allows passage to the front entryway of the house, while a sliding glass door in the kitchen opens to a clearing behind the house.

Hallway/Living Room  Back Door

Mathias is in the kitchen, he's working, sorta of someone you tell that something is to be done. Or else. And this or else includes making sure dinner is ready for anyone who might wander in, so he's been keeping over a slow cooker and pot of stew. He's almost completely focused on his work, nothing else really seeming to matter.

From outside of the glass door, Yi can be seen approaching the farmhouse from the woodlands. As she reaches the door, she sees Mathias there, knocking twice to herald her presence before slipping in. Immediately confronted with the smell of stew, she sniffs deeply. "Mm..." Without much warning, her path inside diverts and takes her to the pots simmering on the stovetop. The Gnawer peers down to see what's inside.

Mathias opens the lids of both for Yi to inspect pointing to a pair of notes he has posted as a list of ingredients. It's home made, though from a recipe, the stew being a beef base with carrots, potatoes, peas, and chunks of roast meat floating about. It's pretty thick, but there's bread nearby for it. On the other hand, the slow cooker has BBQ brisket going, the meat tender.

"Hm..." Yi continues to muse, sniffing a little more, taking in the savory aromas. Then she rocks back onto her heels, swinging by the refrigerator to take out a beer. "Where did you learn to cook that?" she wonders at him, tilting the can back once she's cracked it with a fizz of escaping air.

Mathias gives a shrug. "I'm not a sterotypical male. I know how to cook basic things. Do you want any, or both? We have bread bowls for the stew if you want it." his voice is still cold, but not exactly hostile.

Yi lowers her beer can, letting go of a sigh as she gazes upon the now-cub. "You know, the world of food and cooking it is dominated by men." She slips into one of the table chairs, waving her free hand at him. "I can serve myself, later. But I wonder... who were you making all that for?"

Mathias ehs, "Could be worse." he pauses a moment, "Supposed to have food ready for people who come in. Stew and slow cooker will allow the same food to stay hot for an extended period of time. Unlike, say, steaks. Any of the brisket that isn't eatten will be made into rations, and the stew will keep."

Yi tips the beer back again, listening nevertheless. "Who said you were to cook for others here? One of your chores?" It's a statement made in curiosity, the fostern questioning with an arching of her brows.

Mathias gives a simple shrug, "Don't know." simple comment, as he looks back to the food and keeps it going. Probably he's using it as an escape of some sort. "Want some?"

Yi sets her beer down, standing up from her seat and crossing back over to the stove. Looking over towards one of the bread bowls, she snags one and retrieves another bowl to set the bread into before offering it out to him. A smile accompanies it. "Please."

Mathias gives a simple nod, taking it before opening the stew pot again, taking his ladel and pouring a good amount of thick stew into the bowl, nearly to the top before he takes the bread bowl top and covers it, handing it all to Yi with a fork.

Yi returns to sitting at the table, now with steamy stew in hand. A moment is taken to appreciate the meal in silence, and she picks up the fork to start in on it. Only, the tines stab into a potato, raises towards her mouth, and stops. "You could come eat with me," she comments, eyeing from the side of her gaze.

Mathias pauses a moment, and looks to the stew and the slow cooker. The thing that he choose this for, being able to cook it for a long while is what prevents any reasonable excuse of having to tend it. So, putting the things on spoon rests, he says after a moment, "I guess." short of being whole hearted as he finds a plate and gets some of that BBQ brisket, before going to the table with it.

Yi waits for him to sit before continuing with the motion of putting the potato in her mouth, chewing experimentally. "Hey," she notes in thoughtful surprise, "this is really delicious." The fork moves over more pieces, hovering over some choice ones before selecting a carrot. "Squeaks should have a taste, one day." Chewing a piece against the side of her cheek, she peers over the table at the other, seeing if he might react to anything.

Mathias dosn't really look at Yi, as he takes a slow bite of the brisket, chewing a moment. "There's enough, Squeaks can be brought some. I'm sure there are tupperware bowls here, perfect." His voice is sort mechanical and flat as he speaks though.

"I wonder if she would appreciate it," Yi muses quietly, exhaling onto another piece of meat to cool it. Her eyes drop to the stew in front of her, and for a small time she eats methodically, not saying a thing. About halfway into things, she looks back up again. "How long is it going to be?" she asks aloud.

Mathias looks at his own meat a moment, before he says "Three months, two weeks, four days, seventeen hours, twelve minutes, and fifty-two seconds, until it hits the fan." blowing on the meat in front of him before taking another bite.

Yi peers at Mathias closely, considering him awhile. "If that is when you think the Apocalypse is going to be, then I think I will put my bets on a different horse," she notes, leaning back and shredding off a side of the bread bowl.

Mathias looks to Yi, and says "There are more things that can go down then just that. But, I digress, how long do you think what will be?" his voice even as he eats more tasty tasty brisket.

Yi sets her fork down temporarily, leaning on the table's edge and drinking from her beer can. Just one quick gulp, and she answers, "Before you decide that you are still alive, still Garou, and work towards a tribe's acceptance of you amongst them once more."

Mathias looks at Yi. "I've said there were many things under the sun." His voice turning ice cold. "I am already seeking to meet Jamethon-Rhya, I seek to challange him for the right to become a cub." he takes another bite of food for a moment, "Three and a half months." he says simply.

Yi sits motionless for a minute, her eyes watching the ex-Fang, expression masked over at first. Then she breaks her statuesque rest, setting the beer down on the table and picking up her fork again. However, she doesn't continue eating. "Tell me one thing?" she asks, volume quiet once again but holding back some unsaid emotion.

Mathias gives a look at Yi, his eyes as cold as his voice. "Yes Yi-Rhya? What do you want to know?" he folds his hands in his lap. The perfect cub in words and actions. But, that's not everything that makes a garou.

Yi lets the question hang, not continuing on just yet. Her eyes remain on the cooling stew, fork poking at some of the pieces the way one would stir a fire. Then she breaks the silence. "Why didn't you go?"

Mathias looks at Yi a moment, still cold. "I followed a lie. Followed a lie for a long time. Only one lie after another. It's time to shread the lies and untruths, and to get vengeance."

Yi furrows her brow at her food, his words instilling a pensive expression. "How could it have been a lie?" Here, she looks up. "What was the lie? And who was lying to who?"

Mathias grumbles a moment, "There's been quite a few lies. The biggest one was that I was out here. I followed a vision. But that was a lie. I probably wasn't good enough for the fangs at home, so I was sent here. and out here, I've had to deal with lies about my actions, about my character. Sleeping with a fury, lie. Moving a kin, lie. Asking fucking Falcon about rite of satire, fucking lie. I never asked Falcon. Cedric-Rhya came to me and told me him and Vera-Rhya had made a 'deal'. That everything was going to be okay. Fucking bastard."

The Gnawer remains silent, allowing the theurge to work his way through, to vent. "What was your vision?" she asks.

Mathias grumbles for a moment, "It wasn't." There's a good bit of anger in his words, a cold fury as it was. "I was told by Falcon that I was supposed to come here, that there was a reason." he grumbles, "Guess there was a reason, I couldn't be home in D.C. and fuck things up."

Yi slowly clenches a fist around her fork, eyes narrowing as she lifts her gaze and stares at the cub across the table. "Do not say that. Falcon is an Honorable spirit. And I have known many Silver Fangs who followed him, those who went to great lengths to honor Falcon's wishes."

Mathias gives a shrug. "I did not say he was not honorable Yi-Rhya. I said he sent me somewhere I wouldn't fuck things up. You heard Vera, and you saw Falcon, I wasn't good enough. Not often that you have everything taken from you except your hide. Wait a second, mine was taken too."

At those words, she pulls back. The ragabash leans back into her chair, looking elsewhere and drinking more from the can. "You do not think there were signs before then? Even up until the moot, you could have left. Why? Why did you stay..."

Mathias gives a look at Yi. "The moot showed me how wrong I had been, and how much of a fool. Trusting people to do what would help me best. Instead, I'm setting it up to grow strong enough to make sure I will be able to do it myself."

"Only by falling backwards onto the ground can we see the sky," Yi murmurs softly to herself, as if repeating the words of another. A soft smile of nostalgia tugs at her lips, and then she lets it fade again. "It would be a lonely trip to do things by yourself," she observes.

Mathias gives a shrug. "There's a song, by Greenday. Boulevard of Broken Dreams. It's fitting." he claims simply, before taking his plate and putting it in the sink, checking on the stew and slow cooker.

Yi picks up the bread bowl off the bowl she'd used to hold it, moving as well to put her fork and bowl inside. Leaning against the sink counter, she watches the stew check, though her expression is temporarily distant. "I have not heard it before. But it sounds sad. Is that how you believe the rest of your life will be?"

Mathias pauses a moment, then says "No, there will be other songs. But that's my song, and it's not one that seems to be leaving any time soon. It's about a man who walks down the boulevard, and the only one who keeps him company is his own shadow, but it's always been that way, so it's not a problem."

"Now you sound like Grey," Yi points out with a kind of disappointment, moving back to the table to sit and tear pieces off the rest of the bread bowl. "Such a lonely sounding song," she says softly, again more to herself than the other.

Mathias simply shrugs. "Eh, what can I say? That I have the love and respect of a sept? that I have a close family of friends? If I had left, then what? It would have followed me, and no sept would have treated me better. Better to find vindication I guess. Or vengeance."

Yi lifts a hand, feeling the scar at the top of her forehead, though her action follows through with a run of her hand through her hair. "I guess so. It is easier to find something to be angry about than to think about that sort of thing." She glances up afterwards back to him, and then stands, emptying the beer can and placing it into the recycling bin. "As you think about that, maybe you would consider Rat, whose teeth never stop growing." She collects up the remnants of her bread bowl, the pieces apparently to be taken with her as she goes to depart from the kitchen.

Mathias looks at Yi, and says simply, "Yi-Rhya, Olga-Rhya came and offered me the same earlier. Thank you for the offer and time you spent. But, maybe I can't handle being with people. Maybe that's what's wrong with me." he pauses a moment, "But, when I rite again, look me up, I wouldn't mind joining your pack."

Yi opens up the door, feeling the light breeze that sweeps in. Her eyes close briefly, just waiting out the wind to finish its change. When things are still again, she opens her eyes and looks back to him. "Just don't end up as a broken record," she says in return. "Thank you for dinner," she adds, and her head dips in a bow, both expressing gratitude and her farewells. The fostern turns back to the outside, slipping out as she'd come, moving once again for the fields outside the farmhouse with her bread crumbs to scatter about.
